What I mean by this is the song is very aware that it’s ending an album, and it sums up all of the feelings stimulated by the album, shakes them up inside you, and lets you down gently with words of forgiveness and acceptance accompanied by downwards spiraling synthesizer sounds, that highlight the maturity and studio mastery that the band is gaining with experience. Heading towards the end of the album we have one more memorable track called “Keepsake” and then the finale “Enemy.” The final track is the most self-conscious track that Balance and Composure has ever released. This track is so good because it features the average subdued vocals that took place in the first part of the album, but gives it a much more raw feeling because of just the acoustic guitar and a voice in a very resonant room. If I could put the second part of the albums energy into words I would think of it as “brighter” and “less subdued.” Technically this could be attributed to less reverb (thought there is still plenty) and stronger vocals than usual.Īnother new welcome twist to the album is an acoustic track, entitled “Dirty Head” painting an image of a private and most likely unpleasant conversation between two people over a cigarette. This new energy can be seen the best from the start of the song “Reflection” from lines like, “ burn out and start it all over/we’re building our message in life keep it closer” and guitar licks that provide a happier and catchier feeling. The album preceding often underwent complaints from critics as being “too slow” and “dull and unchanging,” and the start of this album, although being catchy, made me worry that this was to be the case here as well, but with this transition Balance and Composure deliver something new hope. In my opinion this is a very interesting development and is what makes this Balance and Composure’s latest release their best as well. The Things We Think We’re Missing becomes more focused on rebellion and the feeling of what other people are missing from not noticing our front man protagonist, rather than what he himself regrets and what he’s missing. It captures the same solid driving force for the first twenty minutes and then comes to a cataclysmic crescendo at the end of “Notice Me” with loud cries from a desperate broken heart asking for his wasted time back.Īfter the cool down/ transitional track “Ella” following “Notice Me” the album takes a new direction.

This album is a perfect representation of everything this band has been developing over the past 6 years, their sound is very consistent and never gets generic.

This band of truly talented musicians has created a soundscape that by no means can be classified as just “punk rock.” With twanging licks doused in reverb and constant experimental studio effects, this band finds a level of ambience that transcends the punk rock genre as we know it and revolutionizes the sound we consider “alternative.” Personally I was astounded and overjoyed just to see one person on campus wearing one of their t-shirts.įormed in 2007 Balance and Composure formed as a group of seasoned 18 year old punk rockers who have already made a slew of EP’s and albums to put to their name. Starting from the album cover itself it’s easy to see that Balance and Composure isn’t exactly your average band. Balance and Composure- The Things We Think We’re Missing
